Bernardine Evaristo

Bernardine Evaristo's new novel Soul Tourists (Penguin 05) is a modern-day car journey across Europe featuring ghosts of colour from European history. She is also the author of two critically acclaimed novels-in-verse: The Emperor's Babe (Penguin, 2001), the story of a girl of Sudanese parents who grows up in Roman London 1800 years ago and Lara (ARP 1997), which traces the roots of a mixed-race English/Nigerian family over 150 years and 7 generations. She frequently tours abroad and has been writer-in-residence or visiting professor at Barnard College/Columbia University, New York; Georgetown University, Washington DC; University of the Western Cape, South Africa, and at UEA, Norwich. She has also written drama for theatre and BBC radio. She has won several awards including a NESTA Fellowship Award in 2003 and she became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2004.
