The poet William Blake said

“…see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower.
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour”
This is your chance to describe your worlds and share them with us all.

Hints and Tips

Aim for a strong beginning, to really capture your reader’s interest. With a limit of 250 words there isn’t much room for words that aren’t working as hard as they should be!

Try and make your work come to life. Look for vivid, fresh, original ways of describing something and avoid well-worn phrases that you’ve heard many times before.

Your writing may feel more “real” if you use your senses to help convey the world you are writing about. Appearance, texture, sound, smell, taste can be very evocative and powerful in creating your written world.

Everyone has a story to tell. Don’t think yours is too commonplace or “boring”. Tell it accurately with feeling and emotion and you can make it interesting. The story can be made more engaging by the way you choose to tell it whether that is as a poem, a piece of fiction or a factual account.

Don’t be afraid to take risks and explore creative possibilities. Often writing really comes to life when the writer is prepared to let the imagination run wild!

Don’t be frightened of the blank page/screen. If you’ve got an idea you want to write about, put it down on paper or screen. Then you can work with it and change it about until you are happy with the result. Don’t expect your work to appear fully-formed from the clouds on demand and don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t! Writing takes a bit of work and effort but it’s a lot of fun.

We each carry around many different worlds in our heads: family, work, school, interests, hopes, fears, real and imagined people and places, cultures, stories, memories, dreams. They are all of interest. Set them free!

To help you get started

Think about where you come from: a time, a place, a culture. Write about it and see where it takes you.

Invent an imagined world that only you know. Send us a postcard about a place that is important to you. Tell us about somewhere you’ve been. Tell us about somewhere you’d like to go (imagine somewhere if you’d like). Write about your childhood. Give yourself a different life and tell us about it. Write about your secret history. Write about your school/work life. Tell us about your interests: maybe you have a different world as a sports player, musician, dancer, magician…. Invent a character and tell us about their world Write about the worlds you dream
