In mankind's history, few periods compare to Hitler's evil extermination of Six Million Jews. We never stop reminding ourselves of Germany's worst hour, celebrating the annihilation of the SS and revering those who helped millions escape the gas chambers. We share a spirit of togetherness galvanised by years of remembrance and the destruction of a common enemy. We refuse to forget.
Sounds worthy, but I do watch in complete astonishment as another seismic period of man's inhumanity to man is completely ignored or hardly mentioned. Sometimes I wonder if many of us have no knowledge of the history or could it be human beings revel in celebrating other peoples' atrocities, whilst conveniently forgetting theirs? Or does it fall solely to blacks to emulate the Jews and ensure no one forgets. Do we really care?
Well, I do. Maybe I care because I know the period's history and I have seen a slave vessel and the uninhabitable caves where millions were kept awaiting transit. It could even be guilty conscience due to my West African descent, remembering local Chiefs greedily propped up the trade for evil profits. No, I simply care because not caring means forgetting.
We, should never forget because the fourteen million that perished in the transit, were no different from Hitler's six. Hopefully, their souls strangled in their prime have finally met up with those slaughtered and asphyxiated in Auschwitz and hopefully, they are comparing notes. Hopefully, they are asking - how come they remember you and not us?
